Warm Up With a Hot Cocoa Smoothie
Whether it’s cold outside or you’re just not feeling well, boost your nutrition intake and feel cozy with a hot cocoa smoothie.
I don’t know about you but when I am not feeling well, especially with a common cold, nothing looks appetizing nor does it taste good. As a dietitian I know how important it is to eat good foods especially when we are sick. But who wants to eat salads and chicken breast when you feel crummy? Not I. Well, this is when I thought I may try something warm, a hot cocoa smoothie.
What’s inside my cocoa smoothie?
I used unsweetened almond milk because I just can’t stand the taste of milk and honestly, never have; even as a young girl. As we all know, smoothies are great for stuffing a lot of goodness into a drink that you may not typically eat or, just don’t get enough of it in general. I am not a fruit person (shhh…yup!) so I thought adding half a banana would be great considering it it will offer fiber and B6, which is great for fighting infections. Not to mention, bananas just add great texture to smoothies.
I love added sweetness so I squeezed in a bit of honey. Using raw, local honey is also a great idea because it may just help with any local allergens that could be irritating my system. Cinnamon is almost always in any smoothie I make, so I added this as well since it’s delish and a great immunity booster.
My favorite protein/drink mix
What else makes a great smoothie in my household is my favorite vegan, gluten-free, high-fiber drink mix. I love my Juice Plus Complete Dutch Chocolate because I know what it is, no hidden garbage and anyone at any age or stage of life can drink it.
One last thing, although I didn’t add it here, because my throat was irritated already, you could even boost your metabolism a bit by adding a little cayenne! Oh! And, it can also help clear up nasal passages and thin mucus, so give a little sprinkle.
So what do ya say? Are you going to give it a try? If so, please comment below because I would love to know what you think, and, if you add something else I may want to try yours!
Hot Cocoa Smoothie

- 1 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk
- 1 tablespoon honey
- ½ teaspoon cinnamon
- ½ medium banana (not frozen)
- 1 serving chocolate protein powder (Dutch Chocolate Complete is my choice for combatting colds)
Optional
- ⅛ teaspoon cayenne
Place all ingredients into blender and mix well. Warm in the microwave or on the stove top taking care to heat gently. Sprinkle with cinnamon before serving.
I am currently using a Blendtec and use the soup setting so that my smoothie is warmed while I am blending.
What other protein mix for recemend?
I have used the brand Vega as well as Quest. Both are amazing! 🙂 Thanks for checking it out!
