Ok, so you are trying to adhere to a healthier lifestyle…eating more veggies, choosing smaller portion sizes, cooking and eating at home instead of grabbing the to-go dinners…and it seems as though all your efforts are being thrown to the curb by your little ones! Allow me to share how some of the experts live with picky (or as I call mine, selective) eaters.
Don’t fret! We all get there at one point or another, it’s all a part of motherhood. But, does it have to be? No, it does not!
It has been told by many experts (including myself) to offer a variety of colors, tastes, textures, etc…as well as, being sure to offer the particular foods often enough to intially make the food something that is recognized; as opposed to being foreign. Then you offer the food often enough to finally see your the child give it a try!!
As a mother of two, and aspiring-soon-to-be RD, I am consistently looking for new ideas regarding how I too, can get my children to at least try new foods! Here are a few I have found while on my hunt:
Here is a fun blog where you will not only find some great ideas regarding getting your kids to eat more fruits and veggies, but these two ladies are health educators and one is a registered dietitian (of course I am partial to that). Here is a video that I especially love: Super Healthy Kids
I just love Nemours so I had to include a link from thier kids health site. Here is a great article about some pointers regarding kids and food. One of my favorite aspects they touch on: start young!
A new dietitian I have found via the wonderful world of Twitter, Lara Field. Here is Lara’s take on getting our kiddos to eat more veggies.
And let me not forget about one of my personal favorites. My kids and I like to make “raw” meals. On those nights I know hubby will be working late, (and if its not a school night) I make it fun by putting on thier favorite movie and grabbing lots of fresh veggies, fruits, hummus, yogurt…well, you can read more here.
I know there are sooo many more fabulous moms, educators, and dietitians who have great ways to get our kiddos to eat the healthy stuff–and LOVE it!! But, it is Sunday morning, and my two are tugging at my shirt to get out for our morning bike ride/run!!
What’s your favorite resource for healthy eating? Tell me so I can include it next time. Cheers!
