Life gets hectic. There always seems to be just one thing more to do, one more toy to pick up or or one last dish to clean. Is it a daily struggle for you to find the time fit in a workout let alone see the results you are seeking? How about dinner? Have you been able to figure out what could be the healthiest choice that everyone sitting at the dinner table would actually like? When we plan ahead we are more successful at relatively anything we need to conquer in life. Wouldn’t you agree? Here are my 3 fitness secrets that just may shift your thoughts and help you pave your own way towards your personal fitness goals.
1. Stop being afraid of weights.
All too often I hear women say, “I am on the treadmill everyday!” or “If I lift weights, will I get bulky?” We are not men. Period. Bottom line, if you add 2-3 days of weight lifting to your weekly program, you WILL see a difference in your physique as well as your strength. Your activities of daily living will be much easier to complete because you will be stronger. Grab those weights ladies!
2. Consistency, consistency, consistency.
Sometimes the simplest way to see results is to merely stick with the plan. If you commit to 5 days of working out then get to the gym 5 days a week even if your time is cut short or you only lift a percentage of weight you normally would be. When you begin to make up excuses such as “not enough time,” or “I am just too tired to squat with 15 pound dumbbells today,” then eventually that week will go by and only 1-2 workouts will have been completed. Ultimately, another week will go by and maybe only 1 workout will be accomplished and sadly, a month will pass and you will have had only 1 successful week of fitness. This will not lead to the fit and fabulous physique you so desire, and I am sure you already know this. Plan it and stick with it.
3. Make it personal.
A workout or healthy living plan is not a ‘one-size-fits-all’ -EVER! You need to think about what you are trying to achieve, set your goals and really take your lifestyle into consideration. Truly, it is no secret to you. You know what your daily schedule is with your children, your husband, your job and your business. When do you have the most energy? Can you truly be consistent with getting up everyday at 5:30 to work out before everyone wakes up?
Here is an example. I am constantly hearing people tell me, “I cannot believe you work out so late! If I did I would never sleep.” You see, I love being able to get up a bit earlier in the morning so I have time to meditate and just be with me. In order to do this I need to be up around 5:45am which quite frankly, is early enough for me so, yes, I work out in the evening. Typically it is around 9:00pm. I will work out, take a shower and iron if it needs to be done. Then, if there is anything else needing to be cleaned up, I will do that as well. Finally, which is typically 10:30pm, I may read or watch my garbage T.V. (You know the shows, the housewives craziness or my Sunday night fix of Revenge). Got it? Don’t get discouraged, it may also take a few tries to truly figure out what will work but I know you will get it. So grab your favorite workouts and meal ideas and incorporate it all into your lifestyle without allowing anyone to nit-pic with your choices. You can smile at them later when you look smashing, baby in that yellow, polka-dot bikini. (wink!)
